Wangari Maathai (1940 - 2011)

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan political and environmental activist who founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on planting trees, conservation and women's rights. She was the first African woman and environmentalist to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She was awarded the honor for her "contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace."
