Real Mom Talk: Baby Proofing for a New Crawler
April 24, 2013 5:30 pm | by

My almost 6-month old is crawling already. Yeah, I know… I didn’t get much of a chance to get ready for that one. Now that he’s suddenly very mobile, I’ve had to remember what it’s like to have a baby crawling around the house. My older kids are somewhat reckless but at least I can tell them not to do something because it is dangerous and I know that they will have at least understood me, if not listen to me. The baby, unfortunately, will neither understand nor heed my words. So baby proofing… Electrical Cords     I didn’t realize

Real Mom Talk: Why I’m Choosing Home Birth
April 24, 2013 9:11 am | by

When I was pregnant with my first child, I spent a lot of time researching different types of birth and the reasons behind many parts of hospital births. I discovered The Business of Being Born, a documentary that is well known in the natural birth community. The documentary focuses on the cascade of interventions that can happen in the current birth culture in the US. It demonstrates how power and control it is often taken away the from the moms and how over time we have been taught to doubt and think poorly of our bodies and how prevalent these thoughts

Gardening With Toddlers
April 3, 2013 4:36 pm | by

It’s already warmed up enough here to start re-planting our garden. It wasn’t much of a success last year, but that doesn’t stop us from trying again! It’s been really fun to get outside with my kids now that they are both mobile toddlers who don’t need help walking. Their favorite activity when we’re outside is to watch what I’m doing and “help”. Fortunately, gardening is something that toddlers or preschoolers can participate in and even learn a little! Here’s how they helped me plant our garden and flowers: SeedsThe kids had a lot of fun looking at seed packets

Outdoor Fun With Toddlers
March 13, 2013 2:00 pm | by

Now that the weather is warming up for most of us, you’ll notice there are a lot more opportunities to get outside and have some fun with your kids at organized events such as farmers markets, music festivals, art festivals, and other local or civic events. We are particularly blessed to live in a large urban area that offers a ton of family friendly activities. One of our favorite activities is a nearby art festival, which we can walk to from our house. Over the past few years, we’ve taken our children as babies and toddlers to various events and

Spring Forward
March 6, 2013 4:00 pm | by

Daylight Savings Time begins this weekend. So at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, we all get to “spring forward” an hour! If you’re a sleep deprived parent like me, you might not be too thrilled about losing another hour of sleep. I used to love daylight savings time before I had children. Sure, I’d lose an hour on a single day, but I enjoyed having more sunshine after work each day. I also loved that daylight savings time was one of the first signs of spring. When I had children, that changed. I quickly learned that children have a difficult time

Valentine’s Day for Littles
February 14, 2013 2:42 pm | by

Valentine’s Day is such a fun holiday for children. Most of us have fond memories of making a special valentine box for school or sifting through all the phrases in a box of valentines to find the perfect one for our classroom crush. But have you ever paused to realize that this holiday, so much more than others, revolves around words and sugar? Neither are exactly applicable to babies and toddlers. Toddlers are naturally loving and giving, so it’s fun to find ways to celebrate a day about expressing love and kindness to others. Your little one likely can’t write

How do they do it?
February 6, 2013 5:00 pm | by

Toddlers are amazing. They are able to quietly sit in one spot while playing with their toys in such a sweet, adorable way that makes you want to fill an entire Instagram account with pictures in less than 10 minutes. Then, the dryer buzzes or you have to check on dinner. And in the 15 seconds you aren’t watching, your sweet innocent toddler just destroyed an entire room. Let’s not even talk about what it’s like to have twins or more than one preschool age child in your home — at the same time. Depending on their age, it can

Winter First Foods
January 30, 2013 10:30 am | by

My first three boys were all born in the spring or early summer, which meant that they were ready to start eating solid foods as fall turned into winter. This is, in my humble and decidedly non-medical opinion, the best time of year to start on solids. Why? Well because squash* and sweet potatoes are in season! Technically, we are currently just past the peak season for these veggies, but you can still find fresh and flavorful squash and sweet potatoes in the stores and at some farmer’s markets (depending on where you live). I think they make great first

Frugal Style
January 23, 2013 2:30 pm | by

Adding a new child or additional children to our family has stretched us in a lot of ways, but primarily financially. One of the biggest expenses we all face is clothing. Today I’d like to share a few ways we’ve saved on clothing for our kids in the past few years. Say “yes” to hand-me-downs When you first find out the gender of your baby, whether that is before birth or after, you’ll probably get offers from family and friends to pass on their same-gendered children’s outgrown clothing. It’s easy to brush these offers off, thinking that you want to

No Spend January
January 16, 2013 11:26 am | by

The start of a new year always brings with it the inevitable question, “What are your resolutions?” While I’m not really a resolutions kind of girl (it feels a little too much like homework to me), I do think that a new year can be a good time to start working towards some larger goals, if only because it’s an easy time to mark on the calendar. Just like it’s easier to start a diet on a Monday. Or maybe that‘s just me. I think less in terms of “I’ll eat six vegetables every day” (which is a worthy aspiration)
