these hold so much urine that i like to give them a rinse and squeeze before i put them in the pail (hey, its pee...it's sterile!)
and thus far i havet had any stink isues with bumgenius products Rating: [2 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Kristen on Tuesday 25 May, 2010 I just unpacked our Bum Genius one size diapers & doublers & was preparing to wash them when I read the tag of the doubler to find that it is made mostly of polyester. That is SO disappointing to me! A company called COTTON BABIES & they're using polyester to sit next to our babies delicate skin. I wouldn't use polyester underwear for myself. Why would I want to use that for my baby.
I looked on the site for a cotton alternative but found only hemp. I'm disappointed & doubting my decision to use these diapers. This is our first baby & I had been so thrilled to find what I thought was going to be wonderful cloth diaper. :( Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Barbara on Thursday 04 March, 2010 My newborn is too small yet for the diaper this came with, but I used it in one of my Thirsties covers and was amazed at how much is absorbed! Rating: [1 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Brenna on Tuesday 22 September, 2009 We used these for almost a year, both as pocket inserts and nighttime/nap doublers, and were satisfied with them...and then they started to stink. And, boy, do they ever STINK. I have stripped them with RLR, dish soap, boiling water...pretty much everything you can think of, and they STILL smell like something that came out of the elephant's cage at the zoo. I've since switched to stuffing our pocket diapers with my son's outgrown unbleached IPF's, and we are all much happier now. These smelly inserts are sitting in the back of a dark closet, until I can think of something else to do with them. I definitely won't use them in my diapers again! Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Sonia on Thursday 17 September, 2009 BG 3.0's are great! I wanted to use cloth diapers to help reduce waste in the environment and save money but was skeptical because I thought it would be too much work until my girlfriend convinced me otherwise. She recommended that I use Charlie's Soap (in HOT water) to get the diapers clean and odor free. It totally works! It's industrial strength. I have not had a problem with odor and they look like new after being washed. I have had to wash them twice if I let them sit for more than two days. I also bought the BG odor remover spray which helps. The only issue that I have with BG diapers is that they are really bulky and I am concerned about my daughter wearing such a big diaper for long periods of time. I think they could be contoured as well (as someone else wrote) Overall, they are money well spent. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Shannon on Monday 31 August, 2009 I have a few different kinds of diapers and the BG inserts are the most absorbant I've found. My daughter is a heavy wetter and they hold up quite well overnight. I have not had any issues with odor, however I rinse all my diaps and inserts before putting them in my diaper pail and I don't think a lot of people do that based on what I'm reading. I wash every 2-3 days, so rinsing them out at the end of each day seems to have helped immensely and I've had 0 issues with odor! If you're having odor issues I would recommend trying that. I just put the wet diaps in a wet bag throughout the day and at the end of the day before bed, go down to our laundry room and dump all the diaps for the day out in my laundry tub and rinse everything in cold water, wring them out and put them in my diaper pail. Granted it's 5 minutes more work per day, but that's a small price to pay for having a stink free kid! On a side note, I rinse the poopy ones right away to avoid stains and stink. Been using them for 6+ months and I love these diaps and inserts! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Hilary on Wednesday 26 August, 2009 Love these. We only experienced the "stink" issue when we had a really old washer. Once we got a new one, we have had 0 stink issues. I think it was the washer. These are awesome and hold up for a long time. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Dawn on Tuesday 11 August, 2009 I am a big fan of bum genius. There is an issue with the stinky but I have done a lot of contemplation on the matter. The reason that they tend to hold odor is because they are sooooooooooooooooo absorbent that not all of the urine, etc., necessarily gets out. What I have found is that rinsing them out as soon as possible while waiting to be washed and letting them air dry once in a while (though it takes a million years in Florida humidity) really makes a huge difference. Also, the peepee stink they seem to get after overnight use can be troublesome. My husband and I noticed it when our little one sleeps with us. I figured out that it is the bum genius diaper itself causing this. Because they are such good diapers, they don't let any moisture through. The consequence of this is they don't let any air through, either. Airflow is essential in releasing any gases expelled by the anaerobic bacteria that multiply in the urine throughout the night. For our baby, I have managed to combat it by leaving her diaper a little loose in the front so a bit more air can get in. The other benefit is that, as she has gotten older, she does not seem to peepee in the night as much. She usually does it a few minutes after she wakes up (although that is still a few times a night, unfortunately). There have been times when it was really bad, so we just had to change her. All in all, the diapers are so freaking great that it has been worth the small drawbacks. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Erica on Monday 22 June, 2009 These rock!!! I use these in my BG 3.0's & all of my other pockets too.... SUPER absorbent even for my super soaker!!! I am now using these stuffed in an insert sock laid in a PF & they work AWESOME that way too... they have allowed us to diaper on the cheap at home w/PF's & save the few pockets & nice diapers we have for out of the house. LOVE these inserts!!! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Emily on Wednesday 27 May, 2009 We love these! haven't experienced the "stink" that is mentioned some other postings, I'm using Nellie's laundry soda and it works great. I use these snaped down, and position the snaped end in the front of the diaper to give our little Jack some extra absorbancy up front where the boys need it most. At night I use it with the newborn/doubler and havent had a leak yet. It's amazing how much liquid these will hold. I follow the washing directions provided by Bum Genius, and then line dry all components, they're looking great and feeling soft. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Jenny on Monday 01 December, 2008 I used to wash with All Free & Clear, and although there were no stains, I noticed the stink. I've switched the detergent to Country Save, which I bought cheap from Amazon, and now there is no stink! I use the diaper doubler with the one-size insert at night. Since my boy sleeps on his stomach, I pull the diaper higher on his stomach because he doesn't need as much absorbency on his behind. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Linzie on Wednesday 29 October, 2008 We use these with the snap down part up front for extra coverage with our little guy. And we love them! I have an assortment of inserts and these are the go-to insert in the drawer!
We also have noticed the stink, though! We use Allen's and when the stink gets strong, use Calgon Water Softener in the rinse cycle. Or else we do a "sanitary wash" cycle with the Calgon product as a detergent. It's found in the laundry aisle, don't mistake it for something in the bath aisle! Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Shelly on Saturday 25 October, 2008 I loved these inserts when I first used them with my newborn. But as she grew and I expanded the insert, the absorbency greatly decreased. I don't trust these in my pocket diapers alone because my daughter always leaks (and she is not a heavy wetter). I usually end up putting a doubler with it, which makes the diaper very bulky. I agree with some of the other posts about the smell, but have found that putting vinegar in the rinse cycle helps a lot. Overall, disappointed with these inserts. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Shannon on Tuesday 16 September, 2008 I wash every other day. I am super sensitive to smells. My diaper pail stinks and I was finding that the inserts were holding the smell as well. I came across Charlie's Soap and have been using it about a week. I have not noticed the stink since.
My baby has had diaper rash quite often. I use ALL free & clear. I understand that it contains enzymes and optical whiteners. My hope is that with Charlie's Soap the rash will go away. So far it's GREAT.
If you decide to try Charlie's Soap (they have a fun website) would you mind mentioning that I referred you? thanks!

The insert itself is great, although i wouldnt recommend it for heavy weater overnight use, since she SOAKS it in 2-4 hours during the day. Overall i would recommend for daytime use or for light wetters Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by tiffany on Wednesday 10 September, 2008 I can't even explain how awesome these inserts are..! Ok well maybe a little (now I'm going to horribly tell on myself, but for a good cause :D)! I had this insert in a BG 2.0, I put it on my son at 10am-ish, we had to go to an appt. and run by the store. By the time we got home he was asleep so I layed him down. He woke up from his nap at around 3-4pm with no leaks!!! And thankfully no rash!!! I deffinately don't reccomend going that long without changing a diaper (unless at night) but it can deffinately hold up!! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Lindsey on Thursday 04 September, 2008 I ordered the bulk pack of BumGenius diapers with newborn inserts and one-size inserts. We used the newborn inserts in the diapers until she was about three months old and used the one-size inserts for burp rags.
When she started soaking her diapers a little heavier, we switched it around. I'm not going to lie, I'm a very frugal person so we rinse them in cold water and wash them in hot with All free & clear detergent instead of how they direct you to. This is how we've always done it and they never have an odor and they never have stained. I absolutely would stand by these inserts. I wouldn't go any other route! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Ginny on Tuesday 05 August, 2008 In regard to the stink: I have these inserts with the bumGenius OS diapers and have no problem with stinkiness. I use All Free & Clear detergent and wash them as recommended on the label (cold cycle with detergent and extra rinse, warm cycle with detergent and extra rinse) then line dry them. I was also told that it is good to wash them using about a tablespoon of Dawn dish soap to "strip" them of enzymes, etc. that collect on them from the baby yuck and detergent. Using those tips, I have had no problem keeping these diapers looking and smelling like new! Hope it helps! Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Rochelle on Saturday 19 July, 2008 This is what it says on the webpage for the Bac Out:
*Because of the enzymes in this product, it is NOT recommended for the bumGenius One-Size Diaper or the bumGenius All In One Diaper.
My inserts absolutely stink and I have no idea what to do! Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Amber on Tuesday 08 July, 2008 I got these with my Baby Kangas and they do rather well for my 19 month old. I snap down in the front instead of using a doubler and it works good. I have noticed a slight smell too, I am going to try to try the suggestion below to help with that. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Gina on Tuesday 24 June, 2008 Just a note to all those who are frustrated with the stink of the inserts. To get the stink out, soak in BioKleen Bac Out at full strength for a day. It helps for a few months. Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Jessica on Sunday 11 May, 2008 I have about 12 of these inserts and although I loved them at first and they are super absorbent, they hold the stink in very bad. Not the usual wet diaper stink either, a very strong nasty stink. I have striped them over and over and switched detergents and within a week or two, they stink again. They are still very absorbent, despite their smell. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Jane on Monday 10 March, 2008 LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these inserts! I use them primarily at night and whenever it might be a while between changes (traveling). I even fold them over again for "upfront" absorbency for my little guy. I've never had a problem with smells-they come out fresh and clean as a whistle everytime (I use Cheer free and clear). The only suggestion I have is to make them contoured for the crotch area. GREAT PRODUCT!! Rating: [2 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Rebecca on Thursday 28 February, 2008 I now have 15 or so of these, and although they were my favorite because they were easy and very absorbent, they STINK and are useless to me now. I used Allen's detergent and followed all the right instructions, and nothing can get the stink out. I have been using disposables for months now and my many Fuzzi Bunz & Bum Genius diapers sit in the closet. Lots of time and money invested and very disappointed. Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Brenda on Thursday 21 February, 2008 I love these inserts, and the bum genius diapers, I have 1.0 & 2.0 diapers and use these with both. some things i don't like: too much between the legs, frog legs, they could be cut narrower in the crotch area, they don't stay so soft and plush, they get more course with washings (but are still super absorbant!) they seem to hold the stink. I have used many different no additive detergants, different ways to dry them and even had them in storage for a year and still they stink! overall, i will contine to buy them. if these three things were "fixed" they would be super! They stink and there is nothing I can do to get it out. I like to use them at night cause they are so absorbent but my babies stink in the morning.
I'm an experienced CD washer and none of my other diapers have this problem. I have an HE machine and I even tried my mother's front loader thinking more water might do the trick.
I've striped them and striped them and striped them some more. I've gone back to prefolds for use in my pocket diapers.
They have great absorbency but the stink kills them :( Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Lindsey on Wednesday 26 December, 2007 I got a set of these with my bumGenius diaper stash. I love them. They work great and really do hold a lot of liquid. They are easy to stuff into the diapers, but they do tend to take a little time to dry. Normally two times through the dryer. (might be my dryer though its a little old!). Work well and I've noticed that if you through in a dry towel it helps to cut down on drying time. Great product. Well worth the investment. Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Wilynn on Thursday 20 December, 2007 I have one child and I am not as happy with these now 10 weeks later because a few of them have started to come apart at the ends. I have 36 inserts and rotate them regularly among 30 diapers - washing them only in Allen's detergent. They are also primarily dried on the clothesline, so I am not sure why they are coming apart. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Rachel on Sunday 02 December, 2007 Works great! I cannot believe how much these things can absorb! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Diana on Thursday 18 October, 2007 This is the insert I buy for ALL my pocket diapers!! I keep it snapped down in the smallest setting so I don't have to use a doubler (after all, he needs extra in the front and the poop just needs to be contained, not absorbed). I have tried every insert and this is by far the absolute best. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Vicki on Saturday 01 September, 2007 I like these for the most part - they are great in the CB sock, or to add into any pocket diaper. But I'm not diggin' the way the snaps allow it to adjust. I think it's great it CAN adjust, especially if you start out with a newborn. But, it seems a bit bulky if you snap it to the smallest setting - just a minor thing. I'll be adding a few more to my stash. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Ruth on Thursday 26 July, 2007 These truly are great inserts! They hold an amazing amount of fluid, and are trim too. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Sarah on Sunday 01 July, 2007 I got a couple of these in a diaper sample pack purchased from CottonBabies with 2 of the older style BumGenius. (I also have 2 of the newer ones with these exact inserts that were gifts.) These things are a sponge! I use them in my own diapers on car trips. They are a bit bulky on my skinny girl but she is so much more comfortable because shes not wet. They clean up beautiful too, no stains, no pilling. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Toni on Friday 22 June, 2007 The Micro Fiber inserts work as advertised. I'm amazed at how much they hold. I had been using prefolds and these inserts hold as much as 3 prefolds. My only complaint is the bulk, I'd like to see them cut a little narrower in the crotch area to preprevent "frog legs." I only use them at night, they are overkill for day time use. I'm also impressed at how clean they stay, or maybe it's my washing abilities;) Good Product, Thank You |
