Flip Inserts: Disposable Reviews (20) Write Review Rating: [2 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Jennifer on Monday 25 January, 2010I really like the Flip system in general, but I have no love for the Disposable Inserts. I bought them to use while we traveled - which means I bought them for convenience. However, the inconvenience of having to wash my cover every time he pooped totally canceled out the convenience of not having to do laundry.
For pee, they were fine - absorbent enough to make it through nap time. They don't last for overnights, but I didn't expect them too.
I saw several reviews stating that they doubled up on the inserts and I guess I'll do that to use up the rest of my stash, but I won't be buying them again! Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Vanda on Sunday 24 January, 2010 Giving this item a second review, because my daycare did agree to use them. I still have issues with the way they (don't) hold poo, but they do ok with pee. Other than at least one cover getting sent home everyday to be washed, they work pretty well for daycare. I'm rating them a 4 this time, because I gave them a 2 last time, and I think I really consider them about a 3. They're functional, but far from ideal. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Melissa on Thursday 21 January, 2010 My baby has a diaper rash and I have been using these exclusively with her (she is 4.5 months old). I do love them but have noticed some flaws! First I love how trim they are!!!! I love the fact that they do not smell when they are peed in (like disposables do). I love that there is no chemicals in them! If you take 2 inserts for night time they work fabulous!!! My daughter is a heavy wetter at night time and this works super super well for us!!!!
The part I do not like! If she has an explosive diaper, If the poop doesn't make it completely on the insert (which for breastfed babies hardly ever does), it leaks through the cover onto her clothes! Usually I know when she goes and change her right away. Sometimes I don't know and she has sat in it for about 10 minutes or so (that is when it leaks through the cover). I do wish the inserts were slightly wider for that and a tad bit more thicker for night time!!
Overall.........I really like them a lot!!! Perfect for outings or when you need to used strong diaper cream that shouldn't be put on cloth diapers! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Amy on Sunday 17 January, 2010 **To Linda**
I have yet to try these inserts, but was checking them out tonight and comparing them to the gDip & GroB inserts that I've also purchased. I was very happy to find that the Flip inserts fit into the gDip liner nicely when folded down a bit (the same idea as how their microfiber folds down to size). There are no "lines" on my inserts either, so it's not just your batch :o) If you have some gDips, try it- just put the fold towards the back or front depending on whether your LO is a girl or boy- just like the microfiber instructions. Hope that helps! Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Linda on Saturday 16 January, 2010 I love these inserts... for now. :P I bought several packages to try them out, and they fit perfectly in my LO's newborn-size diapers and covers. They're pretty absorbent too, but she's changed at least every 4 hours. However they don't fit the actual Flip cover very well. The disposable inserts aren't wide or thick enough for the cover, and they always end up twisting and bunching... even on my immobile newborn. Hopefully they'll fit better in other diaper covers. They're a bit cheaper than disposable diapers, and they're amazing for training an anti-poo daddy to get used to cloth diapers lol. I'm still unsure of whether I'll be purchasing anymore, but for now my opinion is that I like them. :) Also, has anyone else noticed that there's no S-M-L lines etched on the back, like with the Flip cloth inserts, even though it's shown that way on the package? Or maybe it's just my batch haha... Rating: [2 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Danielle on Saturday 09 January, 2010 I really, really wanted to like these diapers. We use 3.0s exclusively at home, but we're taking a vacation in a few months, so I bought these to test run for that trip. I took them out of town with us over Christmas. They were HORRIBLE! The insert is absorbent, but only right next to my son's genitals. Once that few inches was soaked, the diaper became useless, even though there were 6 inches of dry insert behind that. The only way we could get them to work was by doubling up the inserts, so we went through two packages in just a few days.
The flap at the front is designed to hold the inserts in place. It seemed like a nice idea, until I realized that the flap was getting drenched in urine each and every time. Because of its location, there is no way a boy wouldn't saturate the flap, which is cloth, not PUL. So using the cover through multiple changes means leaving a wet, stinky flap against the kid's skin.
I ended up using Gro Baby disposable inserts in the Flip covers. It wasn't a perfect system, since the adhesive on the GB inserts got seriously stuck to the Flip cover, but it was miles better than the Flip inserts. I was so glad to get back home and into cloth again! Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Amanda on Sunday 03 January, 2010 I bought these, a flip cover, and two gdiaper covers to use over a vacation. I really thought I would like the flip cover more because I had been using it at home with the stay dry insert, but when you stuff it with just a disposable insert it fits way too big. My 8.5 month old was on the second rise setting and it was too big in the waist with just the disposable insert in there. Also, I agree--they are a little narrow for the cover. However, I LOVED these in the gdiaper covers. They fit in very snuggly. I had a few leaks, nothing major and could be attributed to family/friends being unable to adjust the cover properly. I thought they were very absorbent and soft. I used two for overnight and the bottom one was still pretty dry. Rating: [2 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Jennifer on Sunday 03 January, 2010 I bought the flip organic cotton inserts and disposie inserts to boost our stash for travel and to have some "just in case" diapers around. My daughter is exclusively breastfed, 12lbs, and 24" long. The organic cotton inserts are just ok; they feel super bulky and almost square. They absorb wetness but runny BF poop has yet to stay in te cover even though it's on the smallest setting. The disposible inserts were a joke- I have to lay 2 side by side and really work hard to get them to sit in the cover without bunching. They absorb basically nothing- may as well roll up some Bounty paper towels for better absorbancy. Thy're useless for travel because poo gets everywhere so you'd have to have a whole bunch of covers. It's a nice idea, but as far as an economical way to introduce people to cloth diapering.. These would have turned me off for good. Hopefully there is a v2.0 in the works because the idea is great. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Katherine on Thursday 03 December, 2009 I primarily use bumGenius 3.0s but needed something to use when we're on vacation. My parents have a mobile home at the beach where we spend about half the time during the summer but they don't have a washer and dryer. I've been using disposables but no matter what brand I tried my son would have a blowout almost every time he pooped in one (breastmilk poo) even though he never had one in the 3.0s. It got to the point where when he started making noises like he was going to poo we would take his clothes off and put him on a vinyl changing pad to facilitate cleanup. On our last vacation we actually took a stack of the 3.0 covers to put over the disposables and that worked pretty well but was bulky and I still had to hand wash poo out of the covers (but at least not out of his clothes and the clothes of whomever was holding him). So, needless to say I was very excited to see a disposable system that looked like it fit like the 3.0s with covers that looked like they would clean up easily. I was going to wait until next summer to order but decided to order earlier because of the sale.
I've used them a few times now including all day on Thanksgiving and I have to say I'm very pleased.
Absorbency -
While not as absorbent as the microfiber inserts (what is) they do hold a lot! In the 3.0s I usually change my son every 4 hours or so (if he hasn't pooped) and the microfiber inserts are usually about 1/3-1/2 full at that point. The first time I put him in the flip I didn't think about it and put time down for a nap. By the time he woke up he'd been wearing it for about 5 hours and while it was almost completely soaked there were no leaks. They do bunch up when they get wet but it didn't seem to be a problem. I also used one layered inside a disposable and that combo lasted him all night (_12 hrs) with no leaks.
Size -
They are very thin and do seem a bit narrow (although again, it doesn't seem to be a problem). The trimness does have an up and a down side when it comes to fit though. My son is 17lbs and is on the tall and skinny size and currently wears his 3.0s on the medium setting with the tabs pretty close to each other. With the flip cover and disposable insert I had to go down to the smallest setting for the rise and the second smallest setting for the waist snaps. The plus side is that this means he will be able to wear them for a long time. The downside is that I can't imagine this system working for a tiny baby.
Poop -
My son is almost 7 months old and since we started solids a few weeks ago I con't say how these would hold up to infant poo. It seems like they would since they look exactly like 3.0s without the lining. He is however an active crawler and while the poop sometime does get on the inside of the cover it is extremely easy to wipe out. Even when it got on the folded over part in the back I was able to get it almost completely clean with a little cold water in the sink (there was still a little in the threads of the hem). After patting it dry I would have been comfortable putting it right back on him.
Flip vs Gro Baby -
Before flip was released I considered the Gro Baby system but was put off by the high cost and the fact that the mesh liner seemed potentially difficult to clean. A few days after I ordered the flip system I received a buy one get one free offer on Gro Baby disposable inserts which made them about the same price as the flip inserts so I went ahead and ordered some.
Pros vs flip - Gro Baby inserts are much fancier. The elastic on the sides looks like it would help contain breastmilk poo and the adhesive on the back obviously helps them stay in place. The other big plus is that they are compostable. They also come in two sizes.
Cons vs flip - They are normally about twice as expensive as the flip inserts and from the look of them take a lot more energy and resources to make. Also, unlike the flip they have a plasticy backing so you can't layer them for more absorbency at night or for long car trips
My plan is to save the Gro Baby inserts for use at the beach where my mother has a large compost bin and for when I am again dealing with breastmilk poo. For all other occasions when I can't use my 3.0s I'll be using the flip inserts. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Joielle on Tuesday 01 December, 2009 I was skeptical at first because I read some bad reviews RIGHT after I ordered these...but I have been PLEASANTLY surprised. My son is 25 months, 30lbs, and a heavy wetter... and he still has not managed to leak out of one of these. And They are SO TRIM, that I have caught myself checking to make sure i did not forget to diaper him, because it feels like his bum is bare, under his pants... even trimmer than a disposable in my opinion, and without the chemicals that so easily give him a rash. ALSO I want to add, that these are an AWESOME option for if you need to use diaper rash cream... because you just toss it in the trash... and the cover wipes clean. I have found that they bunch up if I leave it on the larger rise setting, because it is SO trim there is room for it to move around...but if you shorten the rise....it fits snugly, and no more bunching :) Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by april on Thursday 26 November, 2009 I really like these! The price is right and they are very soft. They are a little narrow and do bunch up like some mentioned but I'd still buy these over the gdiaper inserts any day! Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Hilary on Tuesday 24 November, 2009 Haven't had a BM yet, so I can't say how well they hold up to that but they do a great job absorbing wetness. They are a little narrow but they fit into the pocket just fine. If your child is allergic to regular disposables I would highly suggest trying these out. Our daughter can't wear regular disposables without getting horrible rashes that diaper creams will not clear up. She has no problems at all with the flip disposable. Rating: [3 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Courtney on Saturday 21 November, 2009 We just received these inserts, and they've held a little bit of pee okay with our son so far, but my initial impression is that they are so narrow! They look more like a maxi pad than a diaper. They're a full inch and a half narrower than gRefills, which doesn't sound like much of a difference, but it really is. Really, really messy for poops with young baby, especially since, just like gRefills, they insert kind of bunches up after baby wets it. If they made this insert wider it would be great. It's nice and soft and seems to be absorbent. We just wanted some disposable inserts around for going out when we don't want to carry a big diaper bag, so I'll probably just stick with the easier to buy gRefills even though they're more expensive. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Melissa on Friday 06 November, 2009 I've never used gDiapers or Gro Baby's disposables inserts, so I can't compare the quality of these against the other disposable inserts, but they work fine and are substantially cheaper. Flip inserts are 27 cents a piece, whereas gDiapers and Gro Baby's are both 40 cents each. I normally use disposable diapers, which are about 17 cents each so Flip are much more comparable in price. My daughter has worn these inserts for 5 hours at a time with no leaks. Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by kristen on Thursday 05 November, 2009 I really like these. their easy, absorbant and not as bulky as other disposable inserts. my only conplaint is the they seem to be a little on the thin side when it comes to the width of the insert. I would like to see them wider in the future. Oh did I mention that they are super soft???! they don't even feel like disposables! thats a absolute plus in my book because alot of disposable inserts have that scratchy paper feel. I really like these and I will be coming back for more! :) Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Heather on Thursday 05 November, 2009 I have to admit, I'm thrilled with the disposable inserts. I love that they are natural. I've used the G diaper dispoable inserts, and while thye are absorbant they are much more expensive, and have that nasty gel inside. I have a 32 lb. 17 month old who is very active, and a very heavy wetter. we usually use the Bum 3.0 w 2 full size inserts and one hemp/microfleece insert and still have to use an additional cover to make it through the night with dry sheets. I've had more trouble with the organic insert, but solved that by adding a hemp insert to it. Rating: [2 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Vanda on Monday 02 November, 2009 I'm so disapointed because I really really wanted to like these. The cover itself is GREAT, but I don't need another cover so much as I need a good disposable diapering solution for daycare. I don't think I can even try these at daycare unfortunately. Like others have said, they aren't wide enough and they don't fit inside the covers at all. The little flaps at the top and bottom are much too loose to do anything to secure the insert. The very first time we tried these my baby had a BM and it got on the cover enough that it needed washed. I can't even imagine how much mess an older, more active baby would make. I hope you find a way to improve these. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!] Reviewed by Selena on Sunday 01 November, 2009 I LOVE the Flip Disposable Inserts. I got them on Halloween and was so excited to try them out that I put 2 disposable inserts in the Flip cover and put it on my 10 month old heavy wetter and off we went. 4-5 hours later we came home and I realized that she would have been fine for that long with just one insert. SO, I put her in 2 more and put her to bed for the night. SUCCESS!!! They were not even soaked by morning. I really think we could go all night with just one insert. I've also used the g disposable inserts and the Flip is hands down better. This will be our go to disposable system from here on out.
