If your pocket diapers start to smell toxic (like ammonia or musty like a gym bag), you might consider stripping them.
This is a simple, “approved for bumGenius” method of stripping your pocket diapers that really works — without washing your diapers a million times.
1. Fill your washer with WARM water.
2. Put your diapers in the washer.
3. Start the agitation
4. Add a little bit of liquid Dawn dishwashing detergent (make sure that it is plain-Jane liquid Dawn, no softening ingredients for your hands!)
5. Agitate a little bit more and add some more Dawn. The goal is to avoid overflowing your washer since this detergent creates alot of suds. Supervision is important for the first few minutes!!
6. Once it looks like you have enough suds in there to get your diapers clean, let the wash cycle finish.
7. Rinse until you don’t see anymore suds.
Voila!! Your diapers are stripped. One cycle. No more detergent residue. No more diaper stink. It really is that simple.

Should I do this after the diapers have already been washed, or can this process take the place of my normal washing routine?

If my hot water heater is set to a really high temperature, is it ok to do this in very hot water instead of warm? My washer doesn’t have a “warm” setting.

Just one more question: Can I do this to my entire load of diapers including prefolds, covers and AIOs, or should it only be for my pocket diapers (I only have 5 pocket diapers)?

Amy,
I’d do this process with already-clean diapers. You should not wash bumGenius in very hot water. You’ll need to read the washing instructions for the other products you own. They may be fine in hot. Typically, you only need to strip polyester products. Modern detergents are designed to work well with cotton products, so cotton diapers wash up very easily.
That said, if your cotton/hemp diapers stink, just wash them again. That *usually* fixes the problem. If it doesn’t, call me. 888-332-2243… we’re here 9-5, CST, M-F.
Thanks for your questions! So sorry its taken me a while to get back to you… I just saw this afternoon that there were comments that needed reponses.
