We’ve often heard from parents that their baby sleeps longer when using a cloth diaper that keeps the baby dry at night. This morning, we found a blog post from one of those moms!
She just switched to bumGenius yesterday and wrote this post this morning:
These diapers are just as easy to use as disposables and they are SUPER absorbent, so even when baby gets wet, he doesn’t feel wet - thus, he is able to sleep comfortably through the night and theoretically, Mommy and Daddy can too. Hallelujah!
When you stop and think about it, this makes perfect sense. Would you be able to sleep all night with something wet against your skin? By keeping the baby drier, the baby is sleeping longer because he is more comfortable.

I guess I was lucky growing up. I knew how to use a diaper before I left home and, for some reason, I thought it was that way in most homes. Little girls play with dolls and learn how to diaper a baby, right? If they don’t learn by playing dolls, they babysit in high school and learn then. Well, it apparently doesn’t go that way for every woman.
When discussing a conversation that she had with Britney Spears, Heidi Klum said “We were talking about babies and diapers and she explained to me a lot of things about diapers I that didn’t know..You know these sticky things on the side? I never knew that they were there. To close them in the front, I was always putting string around. I had no idea. It’s very clever. I learned a lot of things.”
There is something to be said for intuitive design…

bumGenius! DELUXE Fitted Diapers are made of bamboo terry inside/out with soakers made of our exclusive Cotton Babies microfiber terry. This ultra-trim fitted diaper has hook & loop closures with cross-over tabs on both sides. We know that you want colors, so bumGenius! Bamboo Fitted Diapers are available in four bumGenius! colors (natural, twilight, grasshopper and butternut).
These diapers aren’t just good. They are fantastic.
You can feel confident in your purchase because the bumGenius! Satisfaction Guarantee gives you two weeks to evaluate your purchase. Try one diaper, use it for two weeks. There are a number of places for moving out your old diapers to make room for the new ones.
Mo<
The first, Diaper Swappers is an active community of mommas looking for good deals on new and used products. This is a great place to post your old diapers for sale.
eBay also has a fantastic selection of used cloth diapers. This is a great place to buy AND sell.
Cotton Babies also offers a Growing Up In Cloth program that allows you to trade in your gently used diapers. We also accept donations towards our Diaper Grant program.
There are probably people around you as well who would be interested in trying out cloth diapers. Consider looking for a needy momma or a young family without money. Our first diapers were a gift from a momma who knew we desperately needed diapers when our first son was born. She had tried cloth diapering and decided that it wasn’t right for her. Rather than sell her stash, she blessed us.
Good luck as you find the right “new home” for your diapers. As always, let us know if there is anything we can do to help!

What kind of detergent are you using?
Detergent buildup is notorious for causing leaks with Bummis covers. You will know that you have this issue if your covers stink. Wash your diaper covers with a little bit of liquid Dawn detergent to solve this issue.
Make sure that the prefold is on top of the flap.
If you are putting the prefold UNDER the flap in the front of the cover, that will also cause problems (because the moisture wicks straight out through the velcro).
Is your baby out-wetting the diaper?
The other common issue is just that your baby is overflowing the diaper. If the diaper is saturated, there isn’t anywhere for the urine to go but out of the diaper cover. If that is the case, then you need to add some more absorbency during naptime/overnights and your problem will be solved.

If your pocket diapers start to smell toxic (like ammonia or musty like a gym bag), you might consider stripping them.
This is a simple, “approved for bumGenius” method of stripping your pocket diapers that really works — without washing your diapers a million times.
1. Fill your washer with WARM water.
2. Put your diapers in the washer.
3. Start the agitation
4. Add a little bit of liquid Dawn dishwashing detergent (make sure that it is plain-Jane liquid Dawn, no softening ingredients for your hands!)
5. Agitate a little bit more and add some more Dawn. The goal is to avoid overflowing your washer since this detergent creates alot of suds. Supervision is important for the first few minutes!!
6. Once it looks like you have enough suds in there to get your diapers clean, let the wash cycle finish.
7. Rinse until you don’t see anymore suds.
Voila!! Your diapers are stripped. One cycle. No more detergent residue. No more diaper stink. It really is that simple.

Any garment touching skin may leave a slight red mark. Your underwear leave a line because they were touching your skin. The waist of your jeans may leave a line at your waist. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just means that you wore underwear and jeans that day.
The answer to “is the diaper too tight?” seems obvious when you put it that way, right? Pay attention to your baby. If your baby seems uncomfortable, use a different diaper. If your baby is happy, relax.

Diaper stink is caused by one of three things:
- Diapers that are still dirty.
- Diapers that have bacteria growing in them.
- Detergent residue.
My 1-2-3 approach:
1. Keep it simple. Diapers that are still dirty need to be washed again.
2. If washing again doesn’t help the stink, check for detergent residue next.
To do this, wash the diapers without soap. Do you see suds? If so, keep rinsing until the suds are gone. Liquid Dawn in the first wash cycle can help speed this process along.
3. If the diapers STILL stink, you may be dealing with a bacteria issue.
There are two ways to try solving this issue. The first is the sun. This works because the UV rays from the sun actually causes the bacteria causing the stink to die. By drying your diapers on the line, you get the stain removal benefit and a stink-killer too. T The second option is to use a laundry additive. OxyClean would be my first recommendation. My second (and the last resort) is 1/4 cup of bleach in a large washload. To prevent bacteria buildup in the diapers going forward, wash every other time with OxyClean and line dry in the sun as frequently as you can.
