Why Bamboo?
June 20, 2008 8:42 pm | by

The envorinment may not be my primary reason, but it is at least part of my reason for cloth diapering. I want my kids to grow up in a world that is not bogged down in pesticides and garbage. Having reusable diapers helps to minimize both of those.

But cotton can be a picky and pesty crop. It requires a lot of water and often many pesticides, although you can find organic cotton products, they are harder to grow. I live near several cotton fields. The defoliant that is sprayed on them to aid in harvesting is some nasty stuff.

Don’t get me wrong, I love cotton. It is still far and away my favorite fabric.

Bamboo, however is an up-and-coming natural fiber with wonderful benefits that make it especially suited to diapers.

It is more absorbent, so diapers can be trimmer and still do a great job. It is healthful, the bamboo fibers are anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and those properties last through many, many washes. And it is sustainable:

Bamboo takes in five times the volume of greenhouse gasses as an equivalent stand of timber trees and releases 35% more oxygen. It needs no replanting, pesticides or fertilizers, and its roots retain water in the watershed, sustaining riverbanks and reducing water pollution. – bamboofabricstore.com

Bamboo can be found now in fitted diapers, wipes, diaper doublers, and even prefolds. And bamboo makes wonderfully soft baby clothes as well.

Bamboo fabric is not quite as hardy as cotton, but once you feel how silky soft it is, I guarantee you will be hooked.
