Real Mom Talk: Why I Use Cloth Wipes
July 1, 2014 5:23 pm | by

BGFlannelWipes400x400Our cloth diapering story includes a few years of disposables. We had the “luxury” of wiping baby’s bum, putting the wipes in the diaper to roll up and throw away. It was easy, simple, and got rid of everything at once. Once we transitioned to cloth diapers, we were separating the disposable wipes from the cloth diaper to throw the wipes away. It felt… odd. I had to go to two different places in my house to get rid of the waste, sometimes I’d end up with poop on my hand, and I was still creating trash.

Switching to cloth wipes just made sense. We talked about it, did some research on solutions and how to make them more like disposable wipes. I emptied out one of those disposable plastic wipe boxes, cleaned it out really good, and found a tutorial on how to fold them.

Flash forward a few weeks of the disposable wipe nonsense. I bought some cloth wipes. I honestly purchased WAY more than any one baby would need. I think we had about 60? All I remember is it was a lot. But we used baby wipes on everything! Baby wipes cleaned up messy hands, messy faces, messy bums, messy tables, messy everything. We used 60 wipes in less than days. Crazy right?

My husband LOVED the cloth wipes. I made it easy for him and on myself. I’d make the solution, fold the wipes, pour the solution over them in the box, and then we had pop up wipes! Then, after changing a dirty diaper, you had one place to go: the bathroom. We could roll up the wipes in the cloth diaper just like we did when we used disposables and throw it all into the hanging wet bag. The only difference was we were putting them in a wet bag to use again instead of the trash. It wasn’t much more time consuming mixing up the solution or folding the wipes either! And honestly, now I just have my wipes and a spray bottle. They’re wet when I need them to be so I really don’t have any extra time consumed.

Cloth wipes are not expensive either! You can either make your own from some receiving blankets or t-shirts, or you can buy them fairly inexpensively! bumGenius brand wipes are just under $1 each! (They come in a 12 pack for $11.95.) Cloth wipes are just the way to go if you want to save even more money, keep more things out of our landfills, and use something with less chemicals on your precious baby.
