My First Reaction to Cloth Diapers
September 2, 2016 8:00 am | by

When I had my first child, I didn’t even know that cloth diapers were still a thing. So of course, there was no question in my mind whether or not I would use disposable diapers. It wasn’t until my second pregnancy that I discovered cloth diapers still existed. You see, my sister-in-law was also pregnant at the time and after some research, she made the decision to cloth her first baby. I, however, still had the mindset of using disposable diapers. It’s just what you did, or so I thought. So what was my first reaction to cloth diapers?

  1. “Ummmmm that’s disgusting. You’re going to put POOP into your washing machine?!”
  2. “That’s got to be so expensive. You can just grab a box of diapers for $30.”
  3. “You’re not going to have all the time you think after the baby is born. And cloth diapering sounds time-consuming.”

My First Reaction to Cloth DiapersI was WRONG. I didn’t think they would keep up with the cloth diapers as baby got older, but they did! I mean, I was on my second baby, so I thought I had this “baby thing” all figured out. I was trying to be supportive of her decision to cloth diaper and I’ll admit, I was a little intrigued, so I asked her to explain it to me.

She showed me everything – her stash, all the fun prints and colors they came in, how to stuff the pockets, how to adjust the sizing and more. Believe it or not, I thought it all seemed pretty neat… so much so, that I soon made the decision to enter the cloth world, myself! My sister-in-law showed me the ropes and guided me through the process. Before I knew it, I was hooked. Once you go cloth, you don’t go back!

All in all, my first reaction to cloth diapers wasn’t great, but that’s because I didn’t fully understand them. I judged the book by its cover, but how could I really think anything differently about something that was unknown territory for me?

Most moms I talk to in my community also don’t realize that cloth diapers are still around, and how much they have evolved through the years. They definitely aren’t the diapers our parents or grandparents used! So, every time I get the chance, I talk up cloth diapers to any and every mom I can – whether it’s their first or fourth, I’m a great example (seeing as I didn’t start until after my second child was 14 months), to prove that it’s NEVER too late to get started with cloth!
