Cloth Diaper Basics: How to Use Cloth Diapers
November 1, 2015 5:53 pm | by

Want to use cloth diapers? Good! You’re making a great decision. Cloth diapers are an eco-friendly way to save money and care for your baby, which is why many parents want to make the switch from disposables.

To get going, just follow the step-by-step instructions below and then you’ll be ready to use cloth diapers!

1. Start your stash and prep your diapers. We recommend having at least 24 cloth diapers (or 8 covers and 24 prefolds) so you can wash every other day.

2. Put your diapers on your baby and get a good fit. Adjust the diaper sizing by choosing the right rise setting on the front of the diaper (bottom is small, middle is medium, fully unsnapped is large).  Make sure your insert is also snapped on the same setting. The diaper will go on your baby just like a disposable. Secure the tabs.

3.  Rinse soiled diapers into the toilet. This is where a diaper sprayer comes in handy.  Removing any waste before storing in your diaper pail or wet bag will also help with odor and staining.

4. Store your diapers in a wet bag or diaper pail until laundry day. We recommend washing your diapers every other day, as stated above. Learn more about wet bags and diaper pails here and here.

5. Wash. You can learn everything you need to know about washing cloth diapers here.

6. Dry your diapers. Tumble dry prefolds and inserts. Do not use fabric softeners or dryer sheets. Line drying is recommended for covers. Sunning your diapers is another way to dry your diapers and remove stains.
