Cloth 201 – How to Deal with a Diaper Blowout

Cloth Diaper Creams

What better way to spark some fear into a parent than by mentioning the unthinkable — yet unstoppable — diaper blowout.

I mean, diaper blowouts are a mom or dad’s worst nightmare because well, poop.. everywhere.

Now, when nature calls, it calls, and there’s not much you can do about it. But if you’re prepared, especially during a blowout, you can find a little redemption in a horrifying situation.

  1. Check the fit of your cloth diapers. This is singlehandedly the most important step in fighting the blowout. To learn how to check the fit of your cloth diapers, click here.
  2. Pack your diaper bag like you’re expecting a blowout to happen at any given moment. I’d recommend bringing a change of clothes for your baby (perhaps even yourself), two extra diaper covers, three inserts, cloth wipes, a wet bag, changing mat, and bottom spray. You could even throw in a clutching toy to keep your little one occupied while you dive into post-blowout cleaning mode. Always have cloth wipes and diapers on hand. Disposable wipes can dry out if kept for too long and disposables just don’t hold messes like cloth diapers. NOTE: This is everything you need in case of a blowout, not for everyday outings.
  3. Know what to expect. You probably get some indication on when your baby needs to be changed. It could be that your little one sticks to a reoccurring poop schedule or acts a certain way before needing a change, but either way, keep those clues in mind.
  4. Smile. Accidents happen. While it is poopy to be pooped on, all you can do is laugh and go on with life. Being pooped on by a cute little human isn’t the worst thing in the world that could happen.

    5. Always, ALWAYS check for poop before putting your child into his Jumperoo. ALWAYS.
