The Babysitter and the bumGeinius

Dental work. I hate dental work. But what must be done, must be done. So I dropped off the two under-school-aged little people with a good friend of mine so that I could go and be tortured in peace.

My friend has a bunch of her own children, including two close in age to my youngest two. Mine are 6 months and 3 years and hers are 1 year and 3 years. So I knew the kids would have a pretty good time.

She has never been one to understand my love for cloth diapering. It’s just not her thing, and that is fine. To keep things easy for her I put Lily in a bumGenius and included both the bumGenius and a disposable diaper for any needed changes. I showed her my wet bag for the soiled diaper and told her she could just use a disposable diaper if Lily needed a change.

Imagine my surprise when I came back and she exclaimed, “That cloth diaper was just as easy as a disposable! I never imagined it could be that easy!” and then followed up with several more questions about cost and care of the diapers.

I’ll convert her yet!

Take a look here for advice on how to choose. You also might want to read Cloth Diaper Basics too. Good Luck!

I’m due to have my second child soon and want to buy cloth diapers for the first time. I am between mother-ease and bum genius and can’t decide. Can anyone help?

I’ve gotten my older sister interested in using cloth diapers. She’s considering it and it’s her 7th child! That’s a great tip for helping your husband w/ CDing. Mine is afraid of doing it wrong, too. Thanks! =]

My husband, too, was intimidated by the diapers – no matter what kind of cloth diaper we were using. What finally helped was for me to back off and let him know that he could put it on any way he liked as long as it looked comfortable on the baby (no big folds or lumps) and all the diaper was contained in the cover so it wouldn’t leak. Once he knew that those were the only rules, he stopped worrying about “doing it wrong”.

On a recent trip to Vermont, I discovered the bumgenius cloth diaper. I decided then and there that I would try using cloth for my second child. When Ben was born, I was armed with a dozen of the bumgenius AIOs. I couldn’t wait to use them on him. During my maternity leave, I used them almost exclusively, but I was a little nervous about introducing them to Ben’s daycare. I live in Oklahoma and folks around here are not really on the eco-friendly bandwagon yet. Well, the teacher in his class agreed to try them and she is sold. She’s an older woman and remembers the cloth diapers requiring pins and patience. She said these are as easy as disposable. Now, if I can only convince my husband to give them a try!

I hear that Bum Genius are THE diaper to convert mamas to cloth. We have issues with suedecloth but if they ever make a mf inner I’ll sure try it out.

One Sunday at church when I picked my baby up I noticed she was in a sposie and I freaked. 🙁 Apparently they didn’t even want to attempt to put on my cloth ones.

That’s great! It is an uphill battle to get people to accept cloth diapers–I think the disposable companies have them brainwashed. The nursery attendant at church said she was “intimidated” by mine. (I use the bumGenius and only take her already snapped and inserted, ready-to-go ones.) She doesn’t have kids yet though so maybe she’ll give it a shot when she does. On the bright side, my mom (she keeps the baby while I work) has been a good sport about it and even washes them at her house so I don’t have to run them back and forth.
