Real Mom Talk: Finding out the Sex of my Baby
August 5, 2014 7:16 pm | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

“When are you finding out?”  It’s the question everyone asks as soon as they find out you’re pregnant. They want to know when you’ll find out if the baby is a boy or a girl.  But what if you don’t want to find out? When you announce that, people are surprised- why wouldn’t you want to know? There are lots of reasons to find out before birth or not to, but here was the thought process that went into each of our decisions… With our first child, my husband really wanted to know. He said he didn’t like yellow or

Review: Flip Potty Trainer
June 26, 2014 8:18 pm | by

Our just-turned-four-year-old son has been out of diapers for about a year. Or, he’s out of diapers during the day at least. Staying dry all night has been a bit more of a struggle though, so I jumped at the chance to try out the Flip Potty Trainer from Cotton Babies.  I learned pretty quickly that I would need to boost the absorbency, at least initially. But the great thing about the system is that it’s easy to add an extra insert. I loved being able to adjust to what we needed, instead of being stuck with limited options. And even

Real Mom Talk: What Not to Say to a Pregnant Woman
June 16, 2014 8:00 pm | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

What is it about being pregnant that makes strangers lose any filter they may have had during social interactions? As you begin to look pregnant, suddenly everyone in the world has an opinion about the way you look, the foods you eat, the way you plan to feed your child, the size of your body, and a million other things. I’ve heard all of these things (directed at either me when I was pregnant or friends of mine when they were). Let’s all agree never to say them to any pregnant woman again. “Wow, you look so tired. It must

Real Mom Talk: Even MORE Benefits of Cloth Diapers
April 22, 2014 5:53 pm | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

There are a lot of benefits of cloth diapering– economical, environmental, and reports of earlier potty training or less diaper rash. What initially drew my family to cloth diapering was cost. My husband and I had been married a little less than two years, we were young, we didn’t have a ton of money, but we knew that I wanted to stay home with our baby if we could make it work. So when I was pregnant (as soon as I stopped puking eight times a day) I started researching ways to save money. Cloth diapers immediately came up. I

Real Mom Talk: Must Have Products
March 25, 2014 6:03 pm | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

It’s hard to narrow down essentials for brand-new babies. Everyone is going to have some things that they see and go, “What?! You’re crazy, you don’t need that.” And other things on the list will have moms nodding their head in agreement. So let’s preface my list of new-baby essentials with the note that your-mileage-may-vary, but these were all “can’t live without” items. Diapers Duh. Some people like to stick with only one diaper style. But if you can, I liked to have a variety of diapering options. I always had Chinese prefolds handy, a few different covers (the Flip

Real Mom Talk: A Day in the Life of a SAHM
March 10, 2014 7:58 pm | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

What’s a day like for a stay-at-home mom? Well, it varies for everyone. I happen to have four kids, we homeschool, and I do some freelance work. So for me, a typical day goes a little something like this: 6:30- The first of my four kids will wake up. It’s always a different boy that wakes up first, but someone is always up at this time. Whichever boy wakes up first immediately wakes up all of his brothers. We have a STRICT you-must-stay-in-your-bed-until-7:30 rule. So, obviously, no one stays in their bed until 7:30am. (my husband is in the Army

Real Mom Talk: Valentine’s Day and Kids
February 10, 2014 5:32 pm | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

What I didn’t realize before having kids, was that traditions aren’t usually these well-planned out things that you plan on passing down to your kids. I guess maybe they can be but, for the most part, all of our family “traditions” are things that we did once, had a lot of fun doing, and decided to do again. Ta-da! Tradition is born! Making Valentine’s Day into a big deal is one of those inadvertent traditions that we’ve adopted in our family. It started with my buying a bunch of red and pink stuff in the store one year on a

Real Mom Talk: Family New Year’s Resolutions
January 21, 2014 9:46 am | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

Now that we’re halfway through January, it seems like a good time to check in on the resolution front.   Do you make resolutions? We don’t do resolutions in the traditional sense, as much as we like to talk about goals. My husband and I make ourselves lists of goals that we’d like to accomplish as individuals but we also like to take some time on New Year’s Day to talk with the kids about goals. We encourage them to think of some things they might like to accomplish in the new year and also talk about what we’d like to

Real Mom Talk: How Parenting Turned Halloween Around For Me
October 29, 2013 10:35 am | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

I never liked Halloween. Don’t get me wrong, when I was a kid I loved the candy part of the holiday. I liked the candy part even before I was old enough to go trick-or-treating myself: when I was 22 months old my mom walked into the kitchen to find that I had used my toddler MacGuyver skills to rig up some steps and climbed on top of the refrigerator to snack on the Halloween candy that my older brother had collected a few nights earlier. Yum! But the actual holiday itself never appealed to me. I would guess that

Real Mom Talk: Babywearing
October 8, 2013 6:56 am | by
BLOG_realmomtalk

I’ve been a baby-wearer since I first became a mom. That was seven years ago, when my oldest was born. I started out with a sling and then tried a Mei-Tei style carrier. Then I acquired a ring sling. And an Ergo. So it’s safe to say that I have several different baby wearing options and I love each one for different reasons.     Baby wearing was key for my sanity when my kids were infants. Three out of four of them had reflux and staying upright helped keep them comfortable and lessened the amount of crying (both theirs and
