Cloth 101: Diaper Creams and Lotions

Prepping Cloth Diapers

Let’s set the record straight — there is NO cream, lotion or oil that is safe to use on bumGenius, Flip or Econobum diapers.

Despite what you see, hear or read, we ALWAYS recommend using a barrier with any cream or lotion. A lot of people think that because something says its cloth diaper safe (sorry, coconut oil!) you do not need to use a barrier.  This is not true and will void your warranty because these products can cause issues such as leaks, odors, and unnecessary wear and tear.

So why does this happen?

Creams, oils, and lotions are designed to coat your baby’s bottom and repel moisture.  These products will cling to the inScreen Shot 2015-02-22 at 10.04.57 AMner fabric of your cloth diapers the same way they cling to your baby’s bottom, often clogging the fibers and leaving behind a mess of residue.

If you have to use a cream or lotion to treat a rash, which we all will at some point, keep these tips in mind:

– Use a fabric barrier to protect your cloth diapers.  Try bumGenius Stay-Dry liners or Bummis Liners.  Be sure to wash the liners separately from your cloth diaper laundry to avoid contamination.

– Try cutting up an old cotton flannel shirt or T-shirt to use as a liner in your cloth diaper.

– Keep a Flip Cover and a pack of Disposable Inserts in your stash for a convenient diaper cream solution that won’t add extra work to your laundry routine.

– If your pediatrician recommends using a diaper cream and you are looking for a product with natural ingredients, try Angel Baby Bottom Balm

What happens if I get cream on my cloth diapers?

Scrub the “contaminated” area, but beware, some products could leave a stain.

Remember, always consult your pediatrician for further assistance if your baby has a reoccurring rash. You can also try switching detergents to one that’s free of additives like bumGenius and sanitizing your diapers if this continues to happen.

Give us a call at 1-314-892-1855 if you ever have any questions about your cloth diapers.

PS: Rash creams containing fish oils will make cloth diapers smell fish and should be avoided.
