Cloth 101: What cloth diapers are right for me?
November 9, 2014 2:41 pm | by

Bumgenius-Freetime-AIO2There are so many different types of cloth diapers available, so how you do really know what style will work best for you?

To get started and help you narrow down the abundance of choices, why do you want to cloth diaper? Are you wanting to for environmental reasons?  Prefer something more natural? Do you need to save more money? Love the colors and prints? Whatever your reason may be, most parents tend to look to cloth diapers for the environmental, health, or economic benefits.

Here are a few facts to consider:
  • Disposable diapers are the third most common consumer product in landfills today, and may take up to 500 years to decompose.
  • One baby in disposable diapers will contribute 1 ton of waste to your local landfill.
  • On average, disposable diapers can cost an average family more than $2,000 over the course of 2 years.
  • Most disposables contain very harsh ingredients like Dioxins, bleach and plastic, which could cause skin sensitivities or rashes. This is very concerning for parents.

How important is convenience to you when it comes to cloth diapers?

The good thing about today’s cloth diapers is that most systems are just as easy to use as disposables. If you tend to like things quick and easy, check out the bumGenius Freetime. This is an all-in-one (AIO) diaper with built in-inserts, which means no stuffing is necessary. All you literally have to do is put it on your baby. The bumGenius Elemental is also an AIO, but the attached inserts are made with organic cotton.

bumGenius 4.0 One-Size Cloth Diapers are another great option. They’re simple to use and our most popular product by far! The 4.0 is a pocket diaper, so you will have to stuff it for it to become absorbent. The good thing about the 4.0 is that, without inserts, it can double as a swim diaper, and you can try other products in the pocket like hemp or prefolds.

Flip Hybrid Diapers work for parents who like to be in control and customize. These one-size covers are compatible with three different insert types (organic, stay-dry and disposable), so you can personalize your diapers to meet YOUR needs.

It features a one-size cover and prefolds that grow with your child, so this will last you through potty training. Econobum is also available in newborn sizes (so is bumGenius) that you can use to cloth diaper your little one right off the bat — at a decent price.
