Prepping Cloth Diapers

largeSo you’re ready to cloth diaper, but not sure where to start. That’s okay. You’re in the same boat as many new parents.

To use cloth diapers, it’s important to determine your family’s needs. Will you be cloth diapering full time and prefer to have a full stash mixed with hybrids, pockets and prefolds? Is your baby going to use cloth diapers at day care so you need a simple solution like bumGenius? Do you have a certain budget and seek economical systems like Econobum? Want something natural like Hemp Babies or bumGenius Elemental? You can learn about the different types of diapers and here.

If you plan to cloth diaper full time, we recommend having enough diapers to get you through 24 diaper changes. A newborn can easily go through twelve cloth diapers in one day so we recommend purchasing 12-24 cloth diapers in a newborn or small size while washing every other day. An older baby doesn’t need quite as many diapers, but you should still plan for at least eight diaper changes and an overnight solution.

After you’ve found your diapers, it may seem like there are a million different accessories you can buy. Each accessory has a very specific purpose. Some of those products have a wide audience and others have a narrow application. So, here is what we recommend to get most families on the right foot.

At a minimum, you need a diaper pail. A plastic trash bag will work as a liner, but it isn’t the most environmentally friendly choice available. We suggest a washable diaper liner like this and deo-disks to cut down on pail odor.

Cloth baby wipes are absolutely essential. When you are changing a diaper, the wipes usually end up on top of or inside of the dirty diaper. It makes no sense to be trying to keep the wipes separate just so you can throw them in the trash can. If you use cloth wipes, the whole pile just ends up in the diaper pail.

A wipe warmer is a nice item to have. It keeps your wipes warm, wet and ready to use near your changing area. As an alternative, consider a bottom cleaner like bumGenius Bottom Cleaner.

For older babies, the bumGenius Diaper Sprayer will make dirty diaper clean-up a bit easier.
