Cloth Diaper Basics: Inserts 101
December 22, 2013 12:31 pm | by

Cloth diapers provide families with options. StayDryInsert400x400

From the color and closure to the type of inserts you use, you get to choose YOUR cloth diapers.

With that said, the number of options can be overwhelming, so it’s important to know how each type of diaper and insert works.  This post is a quick guide to cloth diapers and inserts.

The bumGenius 4.0 is a pocket style diaper, which means you need to stuff it with inserts to become absorbent.  Most parents stuff bumGenius 4.0s with bum genius Stay-Dry Inserts.  These inserts are one-size and will grow with your baby.  Just coordinate the size on the insert with the rise setting on your diaper.  Since bumGenius 4.0s are pocket style diapers, this means that you can technically stuff it with any type of insert.  If your child is a heavy wetter, you can stuff the pocket with hemp.  You can also double stuff and use a one-size insert along with a bumGenius Newborn Insert.  Each bumGenius 4.0 comes with both a One-Size and a newborn insert.  bumGenius Diaper Doublers also add more absorbency when paired with a One-Size insert.

bumGenius Freetime and Elementals are all-in-one style diapers, so the inserts are built in.  But, if you do need to add additional absorbency, we recommend placing a prefold or hemp insert under the insert that is attached to the diaper.

Flip Hybrid Diapers need to be stuffed with inserts and there are four different types to choose from —Stay-Dry, Day Time, Night Time, and Disposable.  Each of these inserts are compatible with every Flip Cover and are one-size.  Flip Potty Training Inserts are not compatible with Flip One-Size Diaper Covers and Flip One-Size Insets will not fit in the trainers.  Stay-Dry inserts are made with microfiber, while the Day and Night Time Inserts are organic cotton.  The Day Time Insert is similar to a flat, while the Night Time insert is similar to a prefold.

With Flip, you can also use other prefolds and hemp.

Econobum One-Size Diaper Covers should be stuffed with Econobum prefolds.  The Econobum prefold is made with organic cotton, so it is durable and extra absorbent.  You can also use Econobum covers with hemp and other prefolds.

Like cloth diapers, inserts also need to be prepped.  Wash stay-dry inserts once, and organic and hemp inserts five to seven times.

I have used Flip diaper inserts in Flip trainers with great success when we run out of trainer inserts.
