Cloth 101: Prepping bumGenius Elementals

BGEleOrig_Moonbeam400x400The Original bumGenius Elemental is back — while supplies last!

If you added an Elemental (both new or old) to your stash, you're going to need to prep it before use.

Unlike other bumGenius cloth diapers, the Elemental is made with natural fibers, which means it can't be prepped like the Freetime or 4.0. Instead, the Elemental has to be washed five to seven times in hot water. Make sure you dry it between each wash to remove all the natural oils found in cotton fabric. By removing these oils, you are actually making the cotton more absorbent. bumGenius Elemental cloth diapers should be fully absorbent after 7-10 washes.

Once your Elemental is prepped, follow these laundry tips to keep your diapers in tip-top shape:

  •  Separate dark colors and wash separately.
  •  Pre-wash your cloth diapers cold.
  •  Wash hot with bumGenius or other cloth diaper safe laundry detergent.
  •  Rinse again.
  •  Line dry when possible, but tumble dry on medium heat when necessary.

And, just like all bumGenius, Flip and Econobum cloth diapers, we recommend using 1/4 cup of bleach once a month to sanitize your cloth diapers and remove stains.

So Elementals must be prepped separately, but can they be washed with 4.0s and Freetimes? Or do I have to separate them for every load of diaper laundry I do in the future?
