Cloth 101: How to Fold a Prefold

Cloth diapers have come a long way over time. And the beauty of modern cloth diapering systems in today's world is that you have options. Plenty.  With All-in-Ones, Pockets, All-in-Twos, Hybrids, and who knows what, you don't have to use traditional systems like prefolds and covers.

But, if you want to go back to the cloth diapering roots and try prefolds and covers, do it! Some people actually prefer to use these "vintage" systems, which work just as great as modern styles.

Like cloth diapers, prefolds and covers are also more advanced. You don't have to use plastic pants and diaper pins anymore!  Econobum covers are the answer to prefolds in the 21st century. This system features one-size covers with snap closures, but needs to be stuffed with prefolds, such as hemp, Econobum, Chinese or Indian.

EcoPrefold400x400To fold a prefold, here are a few of the most common techniques:

Newspaper Fold  -This is the simplest of all diaper folds. 1.) Fold the diaper in thirds with the thick part in the middle. 2.) Gather any excess length toward the back. 3.) Lay in prefold in diaper.

Bikini Fold - 1.) Lay the prefold out flat. 2.) Fold into thirds lengthwise. 3.) Take the top and bottom halves and twist. 4.) Place one half under the baby's bottom and fold up. 4.) Pull the "wing" tips over the bottom half that is now folded over the baby and secure with pins or a Snappi.

Angel Wing Fold  -  1.) Follow instructions for the Newspaper Fold. 2.) After laying the diaper in the cover, fold the back edges open like wings. You can secure these wings to the front of the diaper with a Snappi Diaper Fastener or diaper pins, although with the Econobum, this may not be necessary, depending on your baby's size.
