Creams, lotions and oils… oh my!
Winter can wreak havoc on skin, especially sensitive baby skin. bumGenius products say "Do not use rash creams" on the packaging, so customers often ask us how to safely treat baby's diaper rash while using cloth diapers.
We understand that life happens and occasionally you may need to use a diaper cream, lotion or balm. The ingredients in diaper creams and lotions help your skin heal by repelling moisture. Repelling moisture is great for sensitive skin, but terrible for the fabric of the cloth diapers. If those ingredients cling to the fibers of your cloth diapers, they may cause your diapers to leak.
To avoid buildup in your cloth diapers and save yourself from having to strip your cloth diapers down the road, we recommend always using a fabric barrier when using any sort of skin care product on your baby's bottom.
Here are a few anecdotal tips and tricks from the Cotton Babies' staff:
- Use a bumGenius Stay Dry Liner closest to baby's bottom after applying the cream. Be sure to wash the liners separately from your cloth diaper laundry to avoid contamination.
- Don't want to worry the hassle of separate laundry? Keep a Flip diaper cover and pack of Flip disposable inserts in your stash for a convenient diaper cream solution that won't add extra work to your laundry routine.
- No local cloth diaper store and need a middle of the night solution? Try cutting up an old cotton flannel shirt or t-shirt to use as a liner in your cloth diaper.
- If your pediatrician recommends using a diaper cream and you are looking for a product with natural ingredients, we suggest Grandma El's Diaper Rash Remedy or aden + anais' mum + bub Soothing Ointment.
Remember, if your baby has recurring diaper rash, you should consult your pediatrician for further assistance.
